Campaign to Get First Lady to Attend Hospital Opening

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Six months in counting for the opening of the new Le Bonheur Hospital. And already, there is another campaign underway! Patients and workers are pulling out all the stops to make sure the state of the art hospital gets the wife of the leader of the United States. They want Michelle Obama to be here for the big day!

They are using cute faces and creative hands to lure someone special to the bluff city…the guest of honor, First Lady Michelle Obama. Hospital administrators say in the midst of healthcare reform, and being a mom herself, who better to invite to see exceptional care at its best!

"This is an excellent example for the country, and children's healthcare and Le Bonheur is a great story, so that's why we want her to come because she believes in what we're doing," says Sara Burnet, hospital spokeswoman.

But how would they get her to The Bluff City. They devised a plan.

Madison Hornbuckle, a 10 year old cancer survivor from North Carolina, reads her postcard. "I told her that if she could just please come, and I was looking forward to meeting her, and that she'll have lots of fun with us."

Hornbuckle drew the bridge on her postcard saying the lights might make Mrs. Michelle smile. All the kids drew and wrote personal messages on postcards.

Burnett says "we've had about 8 thousand postcards go out, that people are now filling out, and we're going to send them all to the white house."
