Inspired by the First Family's example, W. Atlee Burpee & Co. decided to plant its own version of Michelle Obama's starter garden at Fordhook Farm in Doylestown, PA.
They created an exact replica of the White House garden by using a diagram and a close an guess-timation of the cultivars, though some alterations to planting were made in view of soil and typical weather conditions. In the picture of the garden at the right, Burpee chairman George Ball even included his black dog, Nathan, as a stand-in for First Dog, Bo.
You can see the White House garden at Fordhook for yourself at their public Autumn Garden Tour on September 25 and 26. A special Presidential Luncheon is in the works, with a menu including a full range of freshly harvested vegetables.
Reuters is reporting that the Fordhook Farm would like to host the Obama's at a luncheon using the produce grown in their garden.
When Reuters asked What will happen to the bountiful harvest predicted for Burpee`s White House Garden? "We have an Autumn Garden Tour which will be open to the public scheduled for September 25 & 26," the Burpee C.E.O. says, "and we are considering a special Presidential Luncheon if we can convince President Obama or The First Lady to attend. As fellow gardeners, we will have plenty to talk about." Plans for the luncheon menu will include a full range of freshly harvested vegetables.
